What’s needed for a clean install on a Mac
- A backup of the disk before it’s erased. Two options are to use Duplicate (a free utility which can copy and paste an entire bootable volume), or Mac Backup Guru (a paid, fully featured backup utility with unique incremental backups capability) for that. Here is a detailed guide for the process.

Purchase Mac OS X Lion installer on the Apple Store. When it was still Lion DiskMaker, DiskMaker X had the ability to burn DVDs too. Older versions are available here. Download DiskMaker 2.0.2 ( ZIP file, about 3 MB). NB: this version of DiskMaker X is not able to build a Mavericks installer from Mac OS X 10.6.8. Finally, after about 25 more minutes, OS X El Capitan should be successfully installed on the target drive. Boot into El Capitan via the USB Device. After the second reboot, boot from the USB device once again, but this time, select Boot OS X from El Capitan, and select verbose mode. Press Enter and cross your fingers again. If all goes well.
